How to Reset Check Engine Light

check engine light on

Imagine you’re driving through Virden on your way back home and the check engine light suddenly comes on. Sometimes you know there’s nothing wrong with the engine, and yet that annoying little light just won’t switch off. If you’re wondering how to reset a check engine light, the team here at our Virden Mainline Motors service center will be happy to help. Here are just three simple ways to make that happen.

Address Any Problems

Before you go ahead and reset the check engine light, you should ensure there really is nothing wrong with your vehicle. While many issues that can cause your check engine light to come on don’t technically require immediate attention, having them addressed as soon as possible will help avoid small problems turning into larger, more expensive, and ultimately unsafe ones.

Our experienced technicians are always ready to help Birtle area drivers, so don’t hesitate to schedule servicing today.

Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

If there’s no problem that needs attention, you can always manually reset your check engine light. This might sound hard to those who don’t regularly peek under the hood, but it’s something anyone can manage.

  • Turn off the ignition.
  • Put on safety gloves and glasses.
  • Find the negative terminal on your battery – it should have a black cap and a negative (–) symbol.
  • Loosen the negative terminal’s nut with a wrench, then pull the connector from the battery.
  • Keep the connector apart for about 60 seconds, then reconnect it and tighten the nut again with your wrench.

That should reset your check engine light, but you can also…

Check the Gas Cap

A check engine light may simply be down to a loose or cracked gas cap. Fumes are released when this happens, which can switch on your engine light.

To check your gas cap, simply park safely, remove it, and then put it right back on. You can then follow the steps above to disconnect the battery if the engine light doesn’t turn off right away.
